encounter at Gulf of Maine

Friday afternoon, and a woman brings a blank journal with a picture of Che on the cover to the front counter.

Woman:
"Why do you have this book?
He was a filthy Bolshevik. He was vermin.
Do you know how many people he killed?

Gary:
I think that our president has killed more people -

Woman
"You're an old hippy.
Get your hair cut."

Gary
When you sew your lips shut, I'll cut my hair."

What year is this? What Decade? What century?

From one Old Hippy to another, I'm not so sure the length (or amount) of hair has all that much to do with a person's understanding of who's killing whom--and why.

I expect this poor soul wandered into your store because of the heat, and is on her way back home. Colorado Springs? Waco? I dunno. I just hope she's no longer in Maine!

So, this century is my guess.

Hi Gary,

I used to live down the street, just moved back to Minnesota on July 4th. My partner and I used to come into your book store quite frequently. I loved the social justice and environmental oriented selection. Love the bookstore and really miss it!

Sadly, I do believe, and thereby are confirmed by this woman, that there are still people who live in a bubble. Tough life for those people because they are missing out on a lot of great things beside their mainstream, diluted ideals. How about a hint of originality and also the wit to pay attention that we are now in 2008!

What disturbs me more is that her natural reaction to death and destruction is discuss hair styles.

"Live in a bubble" maybe, but I think it would be more accurate to say that it is more like living in a metastasizing cancerous tumor. Their viewpoint would be harmless but not for the fact that their diagnosis is given full faith and credit, (like our ever shrinking dollar)by a general populace comprised of lemmings and rats who hit the front-and-center apparatus lever of convenience and certainty to gain the reward of another pathetic food pellet in order to get them through another pathetic day in their self-delusional paradise. The mainstream media reinforce this perception by leaving out pertinent facts while still eliciting in the viewer that in true "Tim Russert" style, they were tough on the perceived 'bad guy'. What a bunch of smoke and mirrors. To their credit, they really have it down. It is up to the American people to see thru this clever group's manipulation of facts and mount a persuasive and effective counter punch. In their present state of malaise, I am not hopeful that they can respond in kind even tho they, despite recognition of their own ignorance, outnumber the devilish ones 10-1.

Oh my! A real bookstore, where ideas are not supplanted by marketing gimmicks, or censored to fit a sanitized world. How nice to find you, even though I live in Ohio!
