internet review of Gulf of Maine

Today, while searching for an address on the internet, i came across the insiderpages site (www.insiderpages.com ) and saw that Gulf of Maine was listed, with two reviews. I went to our listing and found the following, which has been up on the site since 5/30/2005:

Slanted, specialty store with negative propaganda
by Paula E.

The Gulf of Maine is in a prime location on Maine Street in Brunswick. The store is lovely, well laid out, and cozy; but the content leaves much to be desired. Unless one is an angry homosexual or feminist, most of the books in Gulf of maine will not appeal to him or her. It saddens me that in the middle of a tourist area, such a political statement exists; it would be wonderful if the store offerred primarily books on the area and the state.
Pros: Lovely store, prime location
Cons: Politically slanted content only.

Apparently you should be capitalizing on your prime location to carry tourist guides and, um.... what exactly? maps to the outlet stores? "Chicken Soup for the Downeast Soul?"

Wow! This individual must be half-blind. She obviously looks for that sort of 'propaganda' wherever she goes, otherwise she would have noticed the great bargains in the remainders section, the section of poetry 1/3 the size of the store, the section of local books which includes several books by Mainer Ruth Moore, the cooking section, the (non-lesbian)political section, children's books, great cards, hard-to-find magazines, an entire wall of classic novels in the rear .... This mentally myopic reviewer must have spent some time at Joshua's before stumbling into the Gulf of Maine Bookstore. The Gulf of Maine is a bookstore for intelligent readers and a cornerstone of the community. - Tyler A.

Send her to the Bush Compound in Kennebunkport...minimum political content of any positive value in a prime tourist area...

In the review of a local dentist, Paulla E. done wroted, "Two of my children have had to have teeth pulled by Dr. Bossong, one child several times."

Maybe she oughta have spended a little more time preaching to her kids about the Glories of Dental Hygiene and a little less time leaving her greasy ol' fingerprints on all the doorknobs in town.

how fortunate Brunswick is to have a store that is not only political, but cozy as well. Too bad that more towns are not so graced. Michael Macklin

Long live te Gulf of Maine Bookstore then!
I wish there were more like it in my area (Venice, Italy) It's exactly what I'll need instead of the hundreds of bookstores for tourists full of crap....
Perhaps I'm a sort of pro gay, feminist, post marxist revolutionary, a little alcoholist, pro free drugs type of person...
So what?

Personal is political - this message is well conveyed by this bookstore, when we get the flavor of poetry, music and travel with the spices of peace oriented, anti-war, pro-education and secular views. More to this, the store also offers books from almost all the countries and continents of the world. It also reflects the progressive and more humane character of the people of Brunswick, the people who still think that a more lively world is possible with the fusion of daily work, a sound thought, a poetic heart and vibrating musical mind. So far history has not given enough credit to the common people and the bookstore like Gulf of Maine, but we all know the real truth when we interact directly with the social arena. Who are toiling, who are thinking, who are contributing - we all know. We also know - who are lying, who are manipulating and who are reaping the benefits. We know really a lot, but we have to know more....

The main thrust of our evolution has been to become more open, because we have found time and time again that increased openness, increased dialog and debate, leads to higher quality. This is very well served at the Gulf of Maine bookstore. Openness derived from the secular views, books about the different ideologies, cultures. I found it very encouraging place for any open and "thinking" mind. I would really miss all Saturday noon talks with Gary and Beth.

Sorry about those. I gave you a positive shout-out on my blog today, and will be sure to stop in again when back in Maine in January for the Stonecoast residency.
